Advantages of gravity casting

Feb 20,2025

Simplified mold structure Sand gravity casting: Using wooden or metal molds, no complex core pulling and ejection mechanisms are required, the mold production cycle is short (1-2 weeks), and the cost is only 1/10-1/5 of the die-casting mold.

Gravity casting (a casting method that relies on the metal liquid's own gravity to fill the mold cavity) has the following core advantages, making it widely used in traditional manufacturing:
1. Simple process, easy to use
Simplified mold structure
Sand gravity casting: Using wooden or metal molds, no complex core pulling and ejection mechanisms are required, the mold production cycle is short (1-2 weeks), and the cost is only 1/10-1/5 of the die-casting mold.
Metal mold gravity casting: The mold (such as aluminum alloy metal mold) has a relatively simple structure and can be reused, which is suitable for small and medium-sized batch production.
Low operating threshold
No high-pressure equipment (such as die-casting machines) is required, only furnaces, molds and flipping tools are required, and the technical requirements for operators are low, so small and medium-sized enterprises can quickly go into production.
2. Outstanding cost advantages
Low mold and equipment costs
Sand casting: Molds (molding sand, sand cores) are mostly disposable, with extremely low material costs, suitable for single pieces/small batches (such as customized parts, repair parts).
Metal mold casting: The mold life can reach tens of thousands of times, and the unit cost decreases significantly with the increase in production, which is suitable for medium batches (such as auto parts).
Less energy consumption and material waste
No need for high-pressure filling, energy consumption is only 1/3-1/2 of die casting; the pouring head can be returned to the furnace for remelting, and the metal utilization rate reaches 80%-90%.
3. Strong adaptability of materials and parts
Wide range of applicable metals
Covering almost all casting alloys such as aluminum alloy (wheel hub, cylinder block), cast iron/cast steel (machine tool base, valve), copper alloy (bearing), zinc alloy, etc.
Flexible size and shape
Large size range: can produce parts from a few kilograms to several tons (such as large ship accessories).
Strong structural tolerance: suitable for thick-walled parts, simple inner cavity parts (such as gearboxes), and with the help of sand cores, medium-complex structures (such as flanged pipe fittings) can be achieved.
